If you’re ready to give cold water therapy a try, here are a few tips on how to incorporate it into your routine:

Start by gradually introducing cold water into your showers. Begin with lukewarm water and gradually decrease the temperature over time. You can also try ending your showers with a blast of cold water to invigorate your senses.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try taking cold baths or immersing yourself in a cold body of water, such as a pool or lake. Just be sure to listen to your body and start slow.

Remember, consistency is key, so try to make cold water therapy a regular part of your routine to reap the full benefits.

What To Know Before Taking The Plunge

Before you jump into cold water therapy, it’s important to take these safety precautions:

Firstly, make sure to check with your healthcare provider if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or if you’re pregnant. They can advise you on whether cold water therapy is safe for you.

Secondly, start slowly and gradually increase the exposure to cold water. Your body needs time to adjust, so don’t push yourself too hard at first.

Additionally, be aware of the signs of hypothermia or frostbite, such as shivering, numbness, or disorientation. If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately warm up and seek medical attention if necessary.

Speaking from my personal experience, I learned about cold water therapy a couple of years ago when I stumbled upon Wim Hof. He’s this ridiculous man who can withstand cold. I’m talking swimming under ice, half marathon barefoot on ice and snow kinda cold. He talks about techniques of breathing and how to embrace cold therapy.

Initally, I started small and with cold showers. Turns out, I LOVE THEM. There is something invigorating about taking one. I then bought my own inflatable ice bath and started my daily ritual of using it. I started at 60 and worked my way down to 53 to date. Recently at our Hudson Valley retreat, I was able to put my head underwater for the first time.

How do I feel doing this type of therapy? It’s a sense of calm once you realize you’re going to be okay from the shock of the cold with a splash of euphoria. And then a jolt of energy. It’s like being high without taking anything. Because it lowers your cortisol levels, I find my anxiety more manageable when I do this consistently.

All in all, it’s one of my favorite self-care rituals that I do. I love it so much — I even made a playlist for my contrast therapy experiences.
